After War’s Broken Heart: An Exploration on Moral Injury

Founders Day is an annual event sponsored by the Office of Church Relations, connecting students, faculty and community members outstanding with a scholar in the area of religion (Founders Education Day) and a renewal and reunion event for Disciples of Christ and United Church of Christ people (Founders Day).

The scholar is Rev. Dr. Rita Nakashima Brock ’72. Brock is Research Professor of Theology and Culture and Founding Co-Director of the Soul Repair Center at Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth, Texas. She has been a professor and activist, helping to organize the Truth Commission on Conscience in War.

The preacher is Rev. Dr. Michael Kinnamon, Kinnamon has been a major leader and scholar of the ecumenical movement for decades. He is the immediate-past General Secretary of the National Council of Churches and has led the Consultation on Church Union and the World Council of Churches’ Commission on Faith and Order.

Premiere of Grace Under Fire: Letters of Faith and Meaning in Times of War Friday, March 11 & Saturday, March 12, 7:00 pm, Wallace All Faiths Chapel of the Fish Interfaith Center
The performance is based on real wartime letters from the collection of the Center for American War Letters at Chapman University and was written by the Center’s founder and director, Andrew Carroll.  Chapman student actors, directed by Professor John Benitz, will star in the show. A Q & A session with Carroll will follow Saturdayevening’s performance. This event is part of a larger campaign to seek out and preserve donations of war-related correspondences for the Center for American War Letters. The performances are ticketed events and have open seating.

Saturday, March 12, all day, various locations
This is a day to celebrate Chapman’s connection to our Founders, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and our ecumenical partner, the United Church of Christ. A morning lecture by Dr. Kyndra Rotunda,  prospective student and parent events, worship, lunch, Dr. Brock lecture and a concert by the Chapman University Choir make this a special day that highlights the talents of the Disciples on Campus students. This is a ticketed event.

Chapman Alumni & Friends Dinner Party and Grace under Fire Performance
Saturday, March 12, 4 pm, Beckman 404
An opportunity to gather with alumni and friends for happy hour, fellowship and dinner before attending a performance of Grace Under Fire: Letters of Faith and Meaning in Times of War together at 7 pm. Q & A with the director to follow this performance. The dinner and Grace Under Fire performance are ticketed events.

Most events will be held in or around the Fish Interfaith Center on Chapman’s main campus in Orange, CA.
