Biography

John J. Pérez is a Latinx screen and comic book writer based in Southern California. Raised in Laguna Beach, Pérez graduated with a BFA in Animation from Laguna College of Art + Design. He was a professional storyboard artist and animator for six years including at gaming company Obsidian Entertainment, where he worked on South Park: The Stick of Truth and other projects in a cinematic artist capacity. He left the company to pursue writing and narrative higher education.

Pérez received his MFA from the John Wells Division of Writing for Screen & Television program at USC School of Cinematic Arts, where he was a Fogelman-Rodriguez Fellow. During that time, Pérez became a published comic book author with a series at Action Lab Comics. After graduation, Pérez worked as a freelance screenwriter and became a Writers Guild of America West associate-caucus member. Most recently, he was a contributing writer to Mañana: Latinx Comics From The 25th Century (Power & Magic Press).

 

Prior to working at Chapman, Pérez taught story development at Laguna College of Art + Design.
