Biography

Doug Havard joined Attallah College in 2022 as a lecturer and Coordinator for the SNU Ph.D. in Education program. His research interests include broadening STEM participation for underrepresented students, longitudinal STEM career pursuit, interdisciplinary knowledge transfer, and computational thinking across the STEM disciplines. As a former aerospace engineer and secondary science educator, he has collaborated with school districts and the Orange County Department of Education on developing secondary STEM programs.

Prior to teaching at Chapman University, Dr. Havard served as a secondary and postsecondary educator teaching physics, geoscience, computer science, and engineering throughout the Southern California region. He earned his B.S. in aerospace engineering at the University of Southern California and Master of Science in aerospace engineering at North Carolina State University. An early interest in aerospace research propelled him to engineering positions in advanced propulsion, space launch, applied life-cycle design, and laser system development. Dr. Havard transitioned to a full-time role as an educator in 2008, later completing his Ph.D. in Education, cultural and curricular studies, at Chapman University. He continues to support local high school students in educational research projects using national datasets, engineering and robotics competitions, and on equitable approaches to applying machine learning techniques.
